Harmony (合) and clash (沖) in saju are chemical reactions between characters. Harmony is characters being drawn to one another and binding; clash is characters facing each other across the circle and shaking one another. The eight characters are not static symbols lined up in a row; they pull and push and form relationships, and every time a new character enters through the cycle, those relationships move again. “Good harmony” in compatibility readings and “a clash comes in” in new-year readings are all about this chemistry.

Harmony — three ways of pulling together
Harmony between earthly branches (the lower characters of the year, month, day, and hour) comes in three main kinds.
The six harmonies (六合) are one-to-one attractions, the twelve branches pairing off two by two: 子丑, 寅亥, and so on, two characters meeting and binding each other. The triad harmony (三合) is teamwork, three characters gathering into one large energy. 寅午戌 together become the energy of Fire; 申子辰, of Water. Even two of the three form a weaker bond called a half-harmony. The directional harmony (方合) is three characters of the same season binding together: 亥子丑 forms the force of winter, 巳午未 of summer.
Where there is harmony, relationships are smooth and things bind easily, but bound characters sometimes cannot devote themselves to their own role. More harmony is not simply better.
The pairs among twelve characters — a one-glance table
To read your own chart, you need the pairs. The ones used most often:
- Six harmonies, six pairs — 子丑, 寅亥, 卯戌, 辰酉, 巳申, 午未
- Triad harmony, four groups — 寅午戌 (Fire), 申子辰 (Water), 巳酉丑 (Metal), 亥卯未 (Wood)
- Directional harmony, four groups — 寅卯辰 (spring, Wood), 巳午未 (summer, Fire), 申酉戌 (autumn, Metal), 亥子丑 (winter, Water)
- Clash, six pairs — 子午, 丑未, 寅申, 卯酉, 辰戌, 巳亥
Find your four branches on a manseryeok chart and check them against this table, and which harmonies and clashes exist in your natal chart comes out in five minutes. If your branches are 寅, 午, 子, 酉, for instance: a 寅午 half-harmony (Fire) and a 子午 clash, with 子酉 unrelated — that is how it reads.
Clash — not collision but awakening
A clash is a standoff between characters placed directly opposite on the circle of branches: six pairs such as 子午, 卯酉, 寅申. People often fear a clash as a sign of accidents or separation, but the essence of a clash is the force that shakes what has stagnated awake. Where a clash lands, change is frequent but nothing stagnates. The reason events like moves, job changes, and reorganized relationships cluster in periods when a clash enters is that the energy moves a board that had stopped. Whether the shaking is used as destruction or as transition is a matter of preparation.
Clashes differ in grain by kind. 寅申 and 巳亥, clashes between the gates of the seasons, have the character of movement and departure (they are the Yeokma characters). 子午 and 卯酉, clashes between the midpoints of the seasons, have a large emotional and relational amplitude. 辰戌 and 丑未, clashes between Earths, are quiet on the surface but overturn what was stored inside: clashes read as bringing property, documents, and old problems to light.

Reading harmony and clash in your chart
The reading has two layers. First, harmony and clash within the natal chart: relationships present from birth, so they show as disposition. A harmony in the day branch gives a strong orientation toward relationships; a clash there gives a grain of living alongside change. Next, harmony and clash arriving through the cycle: the year when a character of the ten-year or annual cycle forms a harmony or clash with your natal chart is the timing of events. A year of harmony makes connections and contracts easy to form; a year of clash makes sorting and movement likely. Neither is a verdict of fortune; the accurate reading is as a forecast of “what moves this year.”
Look at which seat moves, too. If the cycle’s character clashes with the year branch, family, the older generation, and social standing move; with the month branch, the workplace, parents, and the environment of work; with the day branch, spouse, residence, and your own private life; with the hour branch, children, later-life plans, and subordinates. Going one step down from “a clash comes this year” to “my workplace moves this year” is practical reading.
When harmony and clash overlap
Sometimes a harmony and a clash land on the same seat at once, in the natal chart or in the cycle. Tradition calls this the coexistence of harmony and clash, and generally reads the clash as undoing the harmony. Bound characters are released and return to their own roles, so in such a year there are many events of long-bound relationships or affiliations being sorted and each going its own way. The reverse happens too: a harmony can block a clash. If a clash arrives through the cycle but the natal chart has a partner that holds that character in harmony, the shaking is cushioned. That is why in compatibility, a pairing where one chart’s clash is held in harmony by the other’s character is read as a stabilizing match.
How to read common situations — consultations
“A clash enters my day branch this year, so I thought I was getting divorced.” A clash in the day branch is “a year the form of relationships and residence changes,” not a forecast of separation. The events that actually happen in such years are mostly changes of form: a move, a spouse’s job change, a change of life rhythm after a birth, both partners getting busier separately. Knowing in advance, you can use the year as “the year to re-tune the shape of the relationship together.”
“My chart has lots of harmony, so why doesn’t anyone come along?” Natal harmony is disposition, not event. The orientation toward relationships is strong, but the timing of connections is set by the cycle. And in a chart with many harmonies, the characters are already bound to each other inside, so there is sometimes no room when a new character enters from outside. For these people, new connections actually enter when a clash arrives through the cycle and undoes a natal harmony.
“Our compatibility shows a clash. Should we not date?” A clash between two day branches means different life rhythms and different wants in the form of the relationship. A pairing where one wants closeness and the other wants autonomy is common. Not a pairing that cannot work, but “a pairing where the form has to be agreed in advance,” and in consultations we often see such couples last a long time by respecting each other’s space.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Is a chart with many harmonies good? Many harmonies mean smooth relationships and connections that attach easily, but because the characters are bound to each other, drive can be dispersed. More important than how many is which seat is bound. Binding the day master’s partner gives a grain of absorption in relationships; binding the month branch, a grain of being tied to a workplace. Each seat means something different.
Q. Does a clash in the chart mean a bad marriage? A clash in the day branch means waves of change in the relationship, not a verdict of separation. Managed in a way that respects each other’s autonomy, it can even be a relationship that never gets dull. What a couple with a clash needs is not “time together” but “rules that acknowledge each person’s rhythm.”
Q. If compatibility shows a triad harmony, are we a good match? A triad harmony is a sign of strong binding, so it is read as a good marker. But compatibility layers the element balance and ten-god relationships of both charts on top of harmony and clash, so it is better not to conclude from one marker. Checking whether the element the triad forms is welcome to both people makes it more accurate.
In closing
Harmony and clash are not good news and bad news but the way characters live and move. The binding force and the shaking force have to coexist for the board not to harden. Know the chemistry of your chart and you can read in advance when connections attach and when the board moves.
